Welcome to My First Post
Hello, I am new to Medium! Since this is my first contribution, I wanted to introduce myself.
My intention for this post is to share a little about:
- My personal and professional background
- Why I chose to join Medium
- What I plan to contribute
About Me
One way I define myself is through personal and professional experiences. Balancing both is tricky, but when I do find balance, my personal and professional lives complement one another.
A degree in multi-media communications landed me my first job out of college as an intern at a news station in Savannah, Georgia. I made my way into a corporate internal communications role after making a move to Atlanta. Over time, I’ve become fascinated with the field of content strategy, and I hope to make a shift in that direction.
On a personal note, I appreciate coffee, reading, and photography. I take pride in being an introvert, but that doesn’t mean I stay locked away from the rest of the world. My family plays a significant part in my life because of the strength they provide.
When I grow in one of these areas, I see room to develop in the other. Now, more than ever, my professional and personal lives are closely intertwined.
Why I’m Here
When I sat down to write this post, I was struggling to think of what to say. The concept of writing an introduction to a platform sounded funny at first. Usually, I introduce myself to a person or a group, either in real life or to a screen of floating heads. So, the idea of introducing myself on the platform seemed different.
As I took time to think through the idea, I made sense of the concept. Taking a moment to reflect helped me realized what brought me here.
I want to Learn. As I’ve progressed in my career, I’ve learned the value of learning. A little on the nose, but I believe professional development depends on always being open to new ideas.
I want to become a better writer. My appreciation for writing has grown over the past few years, and I believe getting better at any activity takes practice. I see writing on Medium as an activity that will allow me to progress professionally and personally.
I want to join a community. Maybe this just another way of saying I want to meet people. As an introvert, I find value in meaningful connections with a few great people. While I still appreciate quality over quantity, I want to step out of my comfort zone to be a part of something larger.
What I Plan to Share
My posts will follow the progress I make in my professional and personal life. The goal is to share my experiences, what I learned, what went well, and what didn’t.
My professional development. I briefly shared my career history, but I’m still figuring out what I’m doing with the rest of my life. This is a heck of a task and honestly a little daunting, but I have a plan!
A substantial part of my plan is to learn new skills and try new experiences. As I make progress, I’ll report back on my successes and challenges. My posts will share what I’ve learned from these experiences.
My personal growth. I also want to share personal success and changes. I believe articulating both will provide the potential for self-development.
By sharing my personal experience, I see the chance to share advice and lessons I learn. Additionally, I hope to gain some valuable feedback from the community.
Conclusion
My journey on Medium will be one of self-development. This experience will be a learning opportunity, allow for personal and professional growth, and allow me to be a part of a community.
